Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

I've had several lunches at Portofino's, some takeout and some in the dining room, and they've all been hot, fast, hearty Italian meals. The quality of the sandwiches/pastas is consistently at or above what you'd expect for the pricepoint: The $6.95 chicken parm sandwich is definitely yummier than it had to be; the $5.95 Wednesday special of baked ziti with a salad and a drink is probably one of the best deals in town. So the servers don't have the best memory, and the coffee didn't taste gourmet--Portofino's is a reliable spot in a neighborhood with few options.

This is my favorite restaurant in my new neighborhood. Our waitress was knowledgable and very friendly. Definitely going to be a regular stop! Their house cab was delicious!

I am gluten-free and there really is no option for me to eat there. My husband enjoyed his thin crust pizza. Be forewarned. Their small is huge. Very good value for money. Grandma had the eggplant parmigiana n declared it good. My son loves the meatballs n spaghetti. I will say a solid old fashioned Italian family restaurant. Service is good.

I will say that the server was very attentive and friendly. We really enjoyed her, however the salad was just ok and the bread was served overly hot. The bread was hot to the point that it burned your fingers as you picked it up. One of us had the baked meat cannoli and one had the lasagna. The cannoli was wonderful. The lasagna was tasteless and burned. Over all the experience was just ok. Minus the great and outgoing server, the restaurant was nothing to write home about.

What a great place to gather with friends, and enjoy a great meal. The food is great and they do have a great house cab to drink!

I love this place for lunch. I've been twice while in St Pete and I really wish I had an Italian restaurant like this at home. I've had the spaghetti and the baked ziti. Both were delicious, and come with a salad and bread. The prices are VERY reasonable. Service is fast, friendly and attentive. I definitely recommend going. It's hard to find good Italian in the south, and even better that it's a locally owned joint.

Went in today with a colleague and found a roach in my drink. Yes, a roach in my drink. I informed the waitress what happened and that we would have to leave, and instead of apologizing she just grabbed the cup and ran in the back with it. I will most definitely not ever be eating here again. All those poor people that were still drinking from their cups when I left...

You can get cheap pizza lots of places but if you are looking for good pizza then you have found it.

Service was good but the chicken piccata was the worst I have ever had - the chicken was rubbery and drowned in what can only be described as a watery avgo-lemono with capers. While the server did remove my entry from the bill and was very polite, I would not recommend this restaurant.

My husband and I had dinner here tonight. I had the "house special" - linguine in red sauce with seafood (clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, and some kind of a white fish), and it was very delicious. Linguine cooked perfectly with lots of seafood, enough seafood to have a mouthful of it in every bite, and the sauce was tasty. The portion was huge, big enough for two meals. My husband had the manicotti. It was one giant manicotti instead of a few small ones. He loved it. The bread that came with the meal was good - warm, soft, and crusty. The house salad that came with my meal was fine, nothing extraordinary but good. The reason I give this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because my husband wasn't able to substitute his salad with a soup. That seems like an easy request, something we're able to get at other restaurants, but you either get the salad or have to pay extra to get something else. Service was fast and friendly. We're definitely going back to this place. I'd recommend giving it a try. The other 1-2 star reviews are from 2010, so maybe they've changed things up a bit to make the restaurant better?

What is wrong with these people? $14.95 for pasta with meat sauce? I go to Olive Garden and it costs $9.50. Same quality and quantity. Olive Garden's never ending salad is better though. I feel so ripped off for spending $14.50 for stupid spaghetti and meat sauce:(

The food was horrible. I ordered Lasagna Al Forno. What I was served was a watery slop of lasagna pasta in a tomato broth. Where I grew up northwest of Chicago, you would be shot for serving this slop. Even the bread tasted terrible. My waitress was horrible. I would never recommend wasting time and money at this place. I wouldn't even give this place a 1 star out of 10.

GREAT PIZZA AND CALZONES!! the only thing I didn't care for were the stuffed shells. But great food otherwise!!!

2.0/5.0 The highlight of this experience was the bread. It was warm, light & fluffy with a nice crust. Caprese salad was mediocre. Linguine & clams (a very simple dish) was terrible. The baked ravioli tasted pre-made and was too liquefied. Tomato sauce had a vinegar flavor. The white wine that was served to us was luke warm. And you can't get a Caesar salad with your dinner unless you pay $7.50??? Are you serious?? Really?? I guess I will have the dinner salad that's included. You know, the one with all those sour, pale yellow interior portions of the lettuce.... Service here was painfully slllooooowww. The waitress had a slight attitude and appeared to be serving too many tables for her talent level.

Outstanding food and service. A true Italian restaurant in a sea of pretenders. Can't wait for our next visit.

What a nice find in a strip mall. I enjoyed the kitschy wall decor complete with faux brick and Italian music playing softly in the background. I ordred a small house salad with a creamy Italian dressing (homemade) and I got the Spinach Manicotti with garlic bread. The Manicotti was cheesy good and the bread..oh! The bread here is so warm, crusty and good! A star off for not having a good chill on the Bollini Pinot Grigio..one does not serve luke warm white wine.

Worst place I have ever been! Poorly prepared food, management has a bad attitude. Server was nice, though, even as she is clearly discouraged being the face of this establishment. Wanted to beat the check and give her a big tip, but it does not work that way.

We also had a horrible experience with rude staff! We went recently (Sept 2011) and the staff was so rude and disdainful that we left before we ordered. Despite the gift card we have, we won't go back to Portofino to use it. I have never left a review like this before. If I don't like something, I generally just don't go back. But our treatment by this snotty, awful, disrespectful waitress warrants a warning to others. I'm so disappointed that this wasn't a great night out. There are plenty of great restaurants in St. Pete. Go to one where you are treated decently. What a horrible experience!

I purchased a certificate at Restaurant.com for this place, so 2 friends and I decided to try it out. The waiter was awesome and had no problem with us using the certificate (other places have had problems, unfortunately). The food was excellent. I had the Chicken Parmesan w/ angel hair pasta which was great (I am picky about this dish). One of my friends had the Gnocchi and she thought it was excellent. I will definitely go back there and will tell friends!
